The Lough
Erne 50 mile relay challenge was born in June 2007 when a 6 person relay team
successfully swam the entire length of both upper and lower Lough Erne (From
Crom Castle to Belleek) in an inaugural time of 22 hours and 12
minutes.
The team that
year consisted of mainly based English Team and one Northern Irish swimmer
with 6 ladies,
Maureen McCoy, Nuala Muir-Cochrane, Julie Bradshaw, Pip Spibey , Lucy Roper and
Rose Levein.
Then in June
2008 an ILDSA team attempted to break the record with 4 swimmers, George Meenan,
Trevor Woods, Jeff Wilson and Chris O’Sullivan. (The team was initially supposed
to consist of 6 but unfortunately 2 swimmers had to withdraw due to family
commitments.)
Although the
weather was not on their side (Especially in the “Broad Lough”) the guys ran the
record extremely close but just missed out on it by a mere 22 minutes finishing
in a time of 22 hours 30 minutes.
In 2010 an
ILDSA 6 person relay team again attempted to break the record and finished in a
respectable time of 22 hours 45 minutes but unfortunately they also came up
short by 37 minutes.
The team that
year was Colleen Mallon, George Meenan, Trevor Woods, Jeff Wilson, Ger Carty and
William Ferguson.
2011 saw Sky
Sports presenter and Fermanagh man Graham Little assemble a formidable 6 person
team consisting of himself, Chelsey Wilson, Paul Colville, Tony McNulty , Adam
Heayberd and Colin Hill.
The team
romped home in an impressive time of 19 hours 6 minutes thus finally breaking
the record set by the ladies back in 2007!!
